Iron ore fraud is less about metal that does not exist and more about capability that does not exist: suppliers without mine access reselling offers they cannot fill, specifications (Fe content, moisture, impurities) that will not survive a discharge-port survey, and logistics chains that were never booked. Verification therefore centers on capability and consistency.
Mine access and authority
A genuine supplier can document their relationship to the mine: ownership, offtake agreement, or a mandate the mine will confirm. Mining concessions are public records in most jurisdictions — the concession holder's name should reconcile with the chain of authority in front of you.
Specification and quantity
Iron ore is priced on specification, and specification claims are only as good as the analysis behind them. Certificates should tie to specific stockpiles or cargoes and come from accredited inspection firms; for any material commitment, independent draft-survey and analysis at load port is the standard, with contractual price adjustments tied to discharge-port results.
Quantity claims should reconcile with the mine's documented production capacity. A supplier offering 500,000 tonnes per month from a concession that produces 50,000 is telling you something important.
Logistics reality
Real cargoes have real logistics: a named load port with capacity for the vessel class implied, rail or truck movement from the mine that matches regional infrastructure, and terms (FOB/CIF) the supplier's history supports. A supplier who cannot name the load-port stevedore has usually never shipped.
Verification checklist
- Reconcile the concession holder of record with the offering chain
- Verify specification certificates with the issuing inspection firm
- Sanity-check offered volume against documented mine capacity
- Require independent load-port inspection and analysis
- Confirm the named load port can handle the implied vessel class
